Bananas!

Did you know that there was an official Banana Day this week? Well, in honor of that, I want to share with you some tips and info about bananas you may not be aware of. As I sat in a doctor’s office one day, I noticed they had take-home sheets about all the great benefits of bananas. And now I finally have the opportunity to share!image

Bananas contain three natural sugars-sucrose, fructose, & glucose. Combined with fiber, a banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy. Two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90 minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes! Energy isn’t the only way bananas can help keep us fit. Read on for more tips and benefits from the great banana. You may never look at bananas the same again!

Depression: Bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood, and generally make you feel happier!

PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamins B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia: High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood, and so help in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: The banana is extremely high in potassium, yet low in salt, making it the perfect food to beat blood pressure.

Brain Power: Research has shown that the potassium-packed banana can assist learning by making students more alert!

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in your diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach, and with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and rehydrates your system.

Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect on the body. If you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals can help keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.

Mosquito Bites: Before reaching for creams or sprays, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Ulcers: The banana is sometimes used as a dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It neutralizes over acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Smoking: Bananas may help people who are trying to give up smoking. Vitamins B6 and B12, as well as potassium and magnesium found in bananas, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain, and regulates your body’s water balance. When stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be regulated with the help of the high potassium banana.

Snacks: Eating bananas as a part of a regular diet may cut the risk of death strokes by as much as 40%!

Bananas are a natural remedy for many ills! Compared to an Apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrates, three times the phosphorous, and five times the vitamin A and iron. And of course, it is rich in potassium. No wonder there is now an official banana day! Wow!

(*Of course, I am not a doctor. Therefore, I have not researched or tested all of these claims! But I do eat bananas, and I don’t suffer from heartburn, high blood pressure, constipation, morning sickness, ulcers, etc…!)

It’s Currently Time!

I love this part of my week! It forces me to take time to sit and think about what I’ve been doing recently. And it give me the opportunity to share with you, and you with me!

I’m Currently

Reviewing: Lots of fantastic products and companies! My latest review is for ENERGYbits, and you can read all about how I’ve started using these little “bits of food” (algae) to energize me for my runs. I’ll be taking the last of my sample provided by ENERGYbits tomorrow before participating in a 5k. Wish me luck!

And I promise, very soon, I’ll be reviewing my beauty subscription service, Birchbox!

Wishing: My house would sell quickly! I’m so ready to move to town!

Eating: Fresh Produce! I love summer! My own square foot garden, the farmers market, and even the grocers have great tasting fresh berries!

Carrying: My iPad! Yes, it’s an obsession. And I’m okay with that!

Running: Wow, this one’s easy. I’m running a lot now, and loving it. God has sent me two beautiful women to run with for the summer at least. This has breathed new life into my attitude and motivation. We encourage one another and spur each other on to greatness. Well, our own form of greatness! I’m scheduled to run a 5k in the morning, my second of the season. At the beginning of 2013 I set a goal of participating in six timed events this year! I’m a little behind, but I’m confident I will be able get them all in! I can do all things thru Him who gives me strength! (Philippians 4:13)

Boost Your Energy-Naturally!

Are you looking for more mental vitality, more physical energy, or a quick way to boost your athletic performance?  ENERGYbits algae tabs are your answer. Yes, I said algae. These bits are rapidly becoming the fuel of choice for runners, athletes, or anyone who wants to be energized naturally. They have the highest concentration of protein in the world and deliver a steady stream of energy without sugar, caffeine, chemicals, or stomach distress. Now if you are like me, your first thought is, “Eeeww..gross. Algae?” And, I must admit, I am a wimp when it comes to taking pills. But these tabs are not considered to be pills; they are actually tiny bits of food. The folks at ENERGYbits were kind enough to send me a sample tin including 50 tabs to sample and review.
image
At first, I was skeptical. Like I said, I don’t like taking pills and I really didn’t like the idea of swallowing algae! But I had agreed to give them a try, and, after all, a deal is a deal. The recommended directions say to swallow 30 tabs 10 – 15 minutes before going for a run. Really? 30? I was in trouble. But, here goes… Now, just to make sure that they did not upset my stomach or come back up during a run, I decided for my initial trial, I would only take 10 tabs. I must say, they went down fairly easily and quickly. And so I was off and running! Surprisingly, for me, I did not get nauseated, nor did I burp up the flavor of algae. Thank goodness! They passed the initial test! Of course, I also did not notice any difference in my energy level during that run. But, as you may have noted, I had not taken the recommended amount. So to give them a fair shake, and before writing any type of review, I knew that I had to take them again. Only this time, I was determined to swallow 20 tabs for my next run!
image
That was this morning. I took two at a time, and again, they went down really quickly and easily. I’m now thinking, “I can do this!” And I have to admit, that I actually did seem to have more energy and was not as exhausted at the end of my run as I usually am. Now I did not set a personal record, nor am I ready to try out for the Olympics. But I am ready, and a little excited, to try the final 20 tabs that are left in my tin. As a matter of fact, I’m having a hard time deciding whether I should take them for my next run this week, or save them for a 5K that I’m running on Saturday. So there you have it. There is so much information on Energybits, that I couldn’t possibly fit it all into one post. Each bit has only one ingredient-Algae. Yet, they contain 40 vitamins and minerals, Omega 3 and 64% protein. That’s 3 times more protein than in a steak! And each tab has only one calorie. It’s like carrying a mini meal in your purse or pocket. For more information, you can go to the website http://www.energybits.com. If you decide to place an order, enter the word Blog” into the coupon box and you will receive a 10% discount! Be sure to check out the website because they also offer recovery, vitality, and skinny bits. Now it’s your turn. Add more life to yours one bit at a time!

Currently…It’s a New Week!

Time is flying by so fast; we’re already into the second half of the year! Did that just conjur up Christmas anxiety anyone?

This week, I’m switching things up. It’s your turn to leave a comment below letting me know what you’ve been Loving, Craving, Missing, Listening, or Wishing. You go first! Then scroll back up to see what I’ve been up to!

I’m Currently

Loving: First and foremost, God. He is my provider, my healer, my redeemer, and my source for everything. Running. Yes, I love it. My family, of course. And summer. I love summer! It’s the opposite of winter.

Craving:Sweets, oddly. I used to only eat salty snacks. But in recent years, I have developed a sweet tooth. Good thing I’m running! Also, vacation. I’m craving a vacation. That could go under the love category too. I love vacations! Oh. And I have a friend who just made macarons and posted them on Instagram! I’m definitely craving those!

Hubby & me in Mexico. Yes, we just got out of the pool!

Hubby & me in Mexico. Yes, we just got out of the pool!

Missing:My friend who lives in another state. Great friend. And I will, Lord willing, see her in just a few weeks! Yay!

Listening:TobyMac has a new song I recently am obsessed with, Steal My Show. Love it, added it to my running playlist! You’ve got to check it out!

Wishing:I don’t wish for much. I hope, and I pray. But if given three wishes, I think I’d wish for…1)A stronger body for running. I’m pretty wimpy! 2)I’d wish for my house to be sold and to already be moved into a new home when I wake up in the morning! 3)The super power of teleportation. You know, snap my fingers and be at the beach. Snap them again and be back home. I could go for that. Especially on those long car rides home from vacation.

Breakfast of Champions, with Chia Seeds!

image

So I finally found Dole Chia seeds at my local Kroger, thanks to a friend who works there! In the nutrition/health food aisle, way down on a bottom shelf. I’ve been looking for them for awhile because I want to try them in my morning smoothies. Chia seeds are one of the latest and greatest nutritional supplements. As a matter of fact, they are part of the Dole nutrition plus line. They contain Omega 3, fiber, and calcium, and is considered a super food!

imageimage

In an earlier Breakfast of Champions post, I stated how I like to use the Yoplait frozen smoothie bags which include frozen fruit and yogurt cubes as a base for my smoothies. So today was no different. Started with the Yoplait, adding milk and banana. But this time I added the Dole Chia Seeds instead of wheat germ. You can see some seeds in the close up picture! I have to say, I really like it! The seeds add a crunch and little bit of nuttiness to the smoothie. Now, they do tend to stick in my teeth a little (they are seeds after all). But overall, I really like adding them. I think the added nutrition is worth the tiny annoyance! My final thoughts? I will be adding these to my diet on a regular basis! And of course, you can add them to much more than smoothies. They can be added to oatmeal, juices, sandwich spreads, sprinkled on salads, and so much more. The possibilities are as varied as your imagination!

Currently…This Week’s Update!

It’s been a crazy week!

I’m Currently

Watching: Too much tv. Hubby has been out of town, so the dog and the television have kept me company! I’ve actually been catching up on some movies I recorded during one of those “free preview” weekends. Tonight I watched Trouble With The Curve, starring the great Clint Eastwood, along with Amy Adams, Justin Timberlake, and John Goodman. I love anything Clint does. He’s a true American classic.

image

Reading: Thankfully, I’ve gotten back to reading my Bible a little more. Trying to memorize the book of Philippians. If you believe in the power of prayer, send one up for me right now. I can use all the help I can get! This brain isn’t getting any younger!

Eating: Not very healthy this week. When hubby isn’t home, I don’t cook much, which leads to eating junk. I hate that. I did eat a salad yesterday. That counteracts the chips, right? Oh, and I’m trying out these new Chia Bars by Health Warrior. Awesome! I’ll tell more about these next week. And I had a couple of healthy smoothies for breakfast this week. I eat best at breakfast!

image

Drinking: Water, coffee, smoothies, and Tonight, a margarita with a friend while we watched the movie!

Learning: A lot. How to say goodbye to a dear friend who passed away. How to let go, and make peace with decisions, and still love the people we leave behind on our journey. To wait. On God’s timing. To run alone and be okay with that. To get up early so I can run before the blazing sun catches me! And to make jam! Hey, I said I’m learning a lot!
image
Come on now, its your turn! Leave a comment and let me know what you’ve been watching, reading, eating, drinking, or learning. I genuinely want to know! Please share. Love, until next time!
